Vegan Challenge 2014

Vegan Challenge 2014 Details

initiated by
Jason Tate & the I.H.S. Nutrition Students

What:  The "Vegan Challenge" is a 4 week diet that follows the guidelines of a vegan diet. (see What is a Vegan for definitions)

Initially the Vegan Challenge was going to be just me doing raw vegan for 30 days then my students and friends got wind of it and they wanted to join. So, I invite you to join all of us for 4 weeks of "compassionate dining" where we don't eat any animal products at all. If you wish to go completely 100% raw with me then please navigate the resources provided on this blog and the various other links and companion blogs for support. The blog will be populated and participated by many friends and family members of mine which have been raw vegan for years.
** In addition to a vegan diet I am pledging to 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise per day. I will achieve this every day for 30 days whether or not I am hiking local trails, walking the neighborhood, or working out at the gym. Of course, you are welcome to join in on the fitness component as well.

When:  The Challenge runs for four weeks beginning Saturday April 12, 2014 and runs until Saturday May 10, 2014.
**On May 10th I would love to have a Family Vegan Potluck Picnic at a park in the Valley somewhere. As details become available they will be posted on the blog**

Why:  The detailed rationale is posted on the main blog page under the Rationale Post but the main idea for doing 30 days of raw vegan is to gain control of my health again. Many of us have added unwanted pounds from the holiday season and new research suggests that a diet high in bread products contributes to extensive weight gain even for vegans! So, I am about 22 pounds overweight and out of shape. A safe and healthy way to lose weight is to get all your micronutrients in a diverse plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, spices, herbs, and whole grains. I have done this before but it was only for 10 days and I saw and felt much better! I am confident that those who join and follow with us on a diverse plant-based diet will also feel much better. I have personal health goals for this and know well the power of a plant-based diet but my wish for those new to the 'groovy power of plants' is to discover that there are hundreds of delicious vegan recipes out there! Any reduction in meat consumption is a plus for our bodies and for the planet. Some may even adopt the idea of "Meatless Mondays" with their new strategies for preparing vegan meals.

Where:  This is happening everywhere! It may have started in a high school food science classroom but it is reaching out much farther through word of mouth and digital distribution. You can follow the Vegan Diary on Facebook on the Public Album My Vegan Diary 2014
